Summer Series 2022 – Part Three

Did you know that the University of Washington Tacoma campus began classes in downtown Tacoma's historic Perkins Building? It was named for newspaper founder Sam Perkins (publisher) and built in 1907 as a newspaper plant for the Tacoma Ledger and Daily News. The paper published from 1880, was sold in 1918 to Frank L. Baker (owner of the Tacoma News Tribune) and continued to be published until 1937. Come take a run through downtown Tacoma as we take in all the sights that Tacoma has to offer and learn more history about the City of Destiny.
Outdoor Fitness | Zumba

Zumba is a fitness class that involves cardio and Latin-inspired dance. It was founded by Colombian dancer and choreographer Beto Pérez in 2001since then millions have danced their way to a healthier physique. Besides losing weight, Zumba is shown to help lower your risk of heart disease, reduce your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, as well as boost your good cholesterol. Bring your dancing shoes for a full-body workout where you’ll burn up calories and the dance floor.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ PG-rated “Encanto” tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The Summer of Love was a social phenomenon that occurred during the summer of 1967, when as many as 100,000 people converged in San Francisco's neighborhood of Haight-Ashbury to express themselves. In our dance party, everyone is welcome to dance as they prefer since every style of dance makes for a great cardio workout – especially since your heart rate is challenged executing different moves. Join our inclusive vibe with a 60s themed dance-a-thon out in the sunshine with everyone's favorite dance beat instructors.

From its first inhabitants of the Puyallup people to the Weyerhauser kidnapping, Tacoma is a city full of culture, architecture, and history. Bring your walking shoes and some water as we take a historic tour of our beautiful neighborhoods and learn more about how Tacoma has grown and evolved through time.

Dance is fantastic because anyone can participate. If you’re able to move, even if it’s only your upper body, you can dance. Join Edie and Casiana for a specialty Ignite class, where you will be utilizing full-body low-impact exercises and grooving along to some of your favorite decades for a full aerobic workout that will take you back and push you forward.

Vinyasa is an approach to yoga in which you move from one pose directly into the next. The coordination of your movement takes place specifically as you exhale or inhale. It gives you the feeling that your breath is moving your body and is often called flow. Vinyasa has been shown to improve energy levels, build endurance, strength, stability, and balance. It also helps promote positive mental health.

Get the family together for a fitness class unlike any other where you’ll test your family’s competitive spirit, fortitude, and have fun. This family focused boot camp class will be led by Belen who will help you sweat and bring a smile to your face with activities designed to make you work together and improve together.

This outdoor edition of The Edge class will push your limits while you have fun in the process. During this class we'll target your metabolism through cardio, strength, and muscular endurance. Join Bryce each Tuesday as he takes the class outside to soak up the sun and sweat out the rest.

Bring your little one to this muscle-enhancing outdoor workout where you’ll both learn or remember that our bodies are strong and capable. Your effort will encourage lifelong fitness and a healthy relationship with exercise as you use bands, small weights, and engage with your kids in this fun-filled, family-friendly workout!

Ages: 15+
Whether you have experienced back pain or just want to keep your back healthy, this is the workshop for you. Learn five basic exercises to enhance back wellness, including the importance of flexion and extension. Come dressed in loose, comfortable clothing and avoid wearing anything restrictive.

Ages: 15+
Spice up your night and join Ilianette as she teaches you the basics of salsa dancing. This event is best suited for partners or couples who are looking to have fun and learn a new skill. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. Registration opens on July 25th, please visit the Welcome Center to reserve your spot.
