What is an Endowment?
Creating an endowment is a way you can establish a living legacy at the Y — in your own name or that of a loved one.
Endowment gifts are especially meaningful because they enhance the Y in perpetuity. These gifts create permanent funds where the principal of the gift is continually invested to generate earnings. Each year, a portion of the fund’s balance is transferred to support the Y program you choose. The core of the fund remains invested for long-term growth.
When you establish an endowment, you can design it to support any area at the Y that is important to you, such as: supporting access and belonging for all, directors and staff in a particular branch, enhancements to a program, facility, or team.
While gifts of all sizes are welcome, you may create a named endowment with a commitment of $25,000. Many donors decide to make a gift that allows their endowment to start benefiting the Y immediately, while arranging for a planned gift that increases its impact in the future.
Endowments Empowering Generations: Meet Nancy and Bruce McDonald
Nancy and Bruce’s Y history runs deep, as both their fathers swam at the YMCA in Seattle, though they did not know each other then. Bruce and Nancy joined the original Downtown YMCA after moving to Tacoma, and Bruce played handball regularly. He remembers John Morgan’s audacious goal to build the Y on Pearl Street and later became a member there before joining the Lakewood YMCA as the family grew. You can find Bruce swimming laps regularly, and Nancy shared that “he would go every day if he could.” As he and Nancy reflect, they share that the Y has been a part of their life as long as they both can remember. Bruce and Nancy have witnessed first-hand the power of having the YMCA in their community, providing an environment for families to flourish and youth to receive life-changing mentoring and care needed for success in life. It is their intention to help support future generations the opportunity to grow and thrive at the Y.

How to Consider your Non-cash Assets to Establish your Endowment
You can plan to fund your endowed gift through your estate. A virtual endowment enables you to hold onto your assets while providing the YMCA the same annual impact that an actual endowment will generate. This allows you to make a significant gift that might otherwise have to be postponed for economic reasons, while at the same time feeling the impact of your gifts today.
Appreciated Securities
Securities and mutual funds that have increased in value and been held for more than one year are popular assets to use when making a gift to Y. Making a gift of securities or mutual funds offers you the chance to support our work while realizing important benefits for yourself.
Gift of Life Insurance
When the original purpose for a life insurance policy no longer applies—such as educating children now grown or providing financial security for a spouse—your policy can become a meaningful way to support our work. There are three ways to give life insurance to the Y: Name us a beneficiary of the policy, make an outright gift of an existing policy, or make an outright gift of a new policy.
Gift of Real Estate
Want to make a gift to YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties without touching your bank account? Consider giving us real estate, such as a personal residence, vacation home, farm, commercial property or undeveloped land. Such a generous gift helps us continue our work for years to come.
Partial or Equity Share in Business
If you hold stock in a closely held business, you may be able to use that stock as a powerful way to support our future. Closely held stock is most often used to support our work in the form of an outright gift.
