I have used many adjectives to describe the experience we have all been going through these past 225 days, and many of them have defined it as being something we never could have imagined. Undoubtedly, this experience has profoundly changed us all; for sure, it has changed our Y. It was just seven months ago that we were a thriving organization, and now we are trying desperately to redefine ourselves to remain relevant and continue to serve our communities. I am proud of how everyone on our team has performed throughout this period; everyone has shown up with a strong conviction to do whatever it takes to contribute. It has not been easy, nor will it become easy in the foreseeable future. It requires a fierce commitment – a commitment I see from each and every one of you on a daily basis.
Today, our team looks much different than it did seven months ago. We are a fraction of who we were back then. We have had to let many of our teammates go, a process necessary to sustain the organization. This week marks the final step in our decision to disengage with those staff who have remained part of our team on furlough. We feel this is the right thing to do, informing them that we will not be able to bring them back anytime soon, effectively ending furlough October 31, 2020. We just do not see the circumstances changing, and we will not be in a position to return everyone to work.
We all feel the pain, but it is critical we continue to work toward rebuilding our Y. We are the hope for our organization. I remain resolute in my belief that we will once again shine brightly for the people in our community. I know they are counting on us – it has been equally difficult for them. Thank you for your commitment to our Y; because of you, we will once again be a great Y.

A note from Human Resources
This year has presented many challenges for everyone. The Y has been working through significant operational and financial impacts due to COVID-19. Because of this we have had to make some decisions for the Y that are difficult and heartbreaking.
As Charlie mentioned in his message above, the furlough will be ending October 31, 2020. Meaning, all staff currently on furlough will be disengaged and their employment will be separated. All Part-Time staff on furlough will be receiving a letter via email this evening.
All staff who are disengaged and separated due to an elimination of role are immediately eligible for rehire. As programs re-open and grow in size over time, staff are eligible to return. Starting November 1, they will have to apply as an external candidate, but are absolutely welcome to do so. Job vacancies will be posted on our website.
The Employee Assistance Program is available here (company code is 9622). Please reach out to humanresources@ymcapkc.org if you have any questions.
Thank you all for your service to the Y!
