Gig Harbor, WA, August 22, 2024 – The YMCA's Board of Directors has authorized the construction of the Gig Harbor Sports Fields after reaching a critical fundraising milestone. The project will feature two lit synthetic turf fields and construction is set to begin in spring 2025.
To date, $5.5 million of the $7 million project fundraising goal has been secured from local individuals and families and includes a $2 million commitment from the city of Gig Harbor. Over the next year, YMCA staff and volunteers will continue fundraising to close the remaining funding gap. Community events to engage with the broader community will be organized to engage local support.
“We’re excited to begin construction of the sports fields,” said Charlie Davis, CEO and President of YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties. “The need in the community for these fields is great. I’m thankful to the individuals and families who have stepped up and contributed in significant ways to help realize this vision for Gig Harbor. More kids will be engaged in physical activities and more community will be created because of these fields.”
The Gig Harbor Sports Fields are the first phase of a multi-phase plan for the Gig Harbor Sports Complex. Phase 1B, which will feature pickleball courts, bocce ball courts, a playground, picnic shelters, an event lawn, and additional parking is currently under construction. Phase 1B will be completed in Q1 2025.
