BeBefore taking on their role as an Engagement Representative at the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties, Annee Appelgate was a member of the Y. They actively participated in the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and successfully lost over 25 pounds. This success was not just theirs alone, but a result of the unwavering support and guidance they received from the dedicated YMCA staff, particularly Courtney Austin, the Healthily Living Program Director at that time.
“As the Association Director for Evidence-Based Programs, I have the honor of meeting various individuals with impactful stories. When I met Annee, I could tell they were determined and eager to move forward in their personal journey. I encouraged Annee to participate in the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program and to become a part of the YMCA family. It has been wonderful to watch Annee progress in their YMCA career and health journey” shared Courtney Austin.
Courtney's belief in Annee's potential marked a pivotal moment in their journey. Inspired by Courtney’s confidence, Annee applied for jobs at the YMCA, which soon transformed both their professional and personal lives. With unwavering determination and the support of the YMCA community.
"For once in my life, I found somebody who actually liked their job. I've had doctors tell me I'll never work full-time. I didn't think I could do it, but Courtney told me to at least try. That same day, I applied to a bunch of positions at the Y," shared Annee, their determination shining through.
On their birthday, Annee found themselves in a new role within the Child Care membership service team. Membership Director Marty Ollett's immediate concern was how the team could accommodate Annee, who was then on a motorized scooter and rarely walking.
"Under the leadership of Marty Ollett, she provided an environment where I could not only work but also grow and thrive. It was a place where my abilities were recognized, and I was given the opportunity to have a full-time job," explained Annee.
For Marty, Annee has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Y.
“When they joined our childcare team, they took the time to ensure the office was suitable for them, showing their commitment and resilience. Their eagerness to contribute and their request for a Wiki page to make our internal documents more accessible demonstrates their proactive and thoughtful approach. Since joining, Annee has been a dedicated member, actively working to enhance our services and raise awareness about living with disabilities. “
Shortly after joining the Child Care Membership team, Annee's supervisor, Michelle Stedman, inspired them to explore other aspects of the Y that Annee was eager to learn more about.
This led them to do informational interviews and job shadows, during which they learned about the Engagement Center.
"I realized that what I truly wanted was to solve problems and assist people. I adored childcare, but the engagement center has truly captivated me," Annee shared.
Now that they can work from home, Annee has the space in their schedule to return to the Diabetes Prevention Program once again and attend the Enhance®Fitness classes at the Morgan Family Y.
"One of the things that kept me from wanting to apply for a job at a gym or a place of fitness. Is that my health is not the best, and my disability is sometimes trapping me from being able to do the things I want to do with my life. But I walk into the Y, and everyone is on a different fitness level, and everybody is ok where everybody else is," said Annee.
