February is Black History Month—a time to honor the profound impact of Black Americans. At the Y, we celebrate the many Black leaders who have shaped our legacy and strengthened our community and we're proud to be a place where people from all backgrounds can come together.

Black History Month is not just about looking back—it’s about taking action for the future and uplifting Black leaders who empower our communities daily. One such leader is Dionte Simon—a shining example of someone who found guidance at the Y as a teen before becoming a leader himself.

From Y Kid to Community Leader: Dionte Simon’s Story

Dionte Simon’s journey with the Y began as a teen, where the Y provided him with a safe space to belong and the guidance of mentor Chris Spivey, Senior Executive Director for the YMCA Center for Community Impact. Chris’s mentorship helped Dionte recognize his potential and his passion for community service and leadership.

“Seeing Dionte’s growth from a young teen to an outstanding mentor has been amazing,” said Chris. “He cares deeply about the youth he serves, and they admire and look up to him. Dionte’s impact on his community is tremendous.”

As a young adult, Dionte naturally gravitated toward giving back. In 2019, he joined the Y’s staff, eventually stepping into the role of Youth Program Director at the YMCA Center for Community Impact. Now, Dionte is the mentor he once looked up to—leading a community learning center that helps kids at Lochburn Middle School navigate life’s challenges and ensuring they have the same opportunities that he had. Dionte was named the 2023 YMCA Mentor of the Year for his dedication and leadership, which transform lives and provide students with the support and encouragement they need to succeed as they transition into adulthood.

"Dionte is mentoring kids, supervising clubs, providing a safe space for students to eat lunch, or working with our athletes,” said Carla Estes, principal at Lochburn Middle School. “He is integral to what we do for our Lochburn students. You are essential to the kids if they know your name, and every time I see him, many kids yell out, 'Hi, Mr. Dionte!'

Dionte’s journey is a testament to the power of mentorship, resilience, and community. He represents what the Y stands for—helping individuals grow, lead, and create lasting change for years to come, all embodied by his favorite quote: “In this line of work, we are planting seeds that we may never see grow.”
